Gotham City is often described as a place that is

cloaked with mystery and mysticism. It is a metropolitan city with a population of 12 million people. In the late 18th and early 19th century it was a major port city known as Gotham Town. In 1840 Judge Solomon Wayne and architect Cyrus Pinkney spearheaded Gotham’s urban planning initiative which help lay the foundation for the city. Under Pinkney’s “Gotham Style” design the city had Gargoyles to “frighten people on to the path of righteousness”, his design was also said to consist of “thick walls to lock in virtue”. Structures similar to those designed by Pinkney were replicated throughout the city. By the end of the 19th century Gotham City became known as a hub of industry.

During the 1930’s Gotham City was synonymously known for its crime and corruption. This led to the Justice Society of America making its headquarters in Gotham City. One of Gotham’s corrupt figures was Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb who was known for having his hands in many pockets but was forced to resign when Batman found evidence of such corruption.
