Half Caff is a fictional coffee shop, which is located at the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. At a nearly 8,840 feet elevation, a small 800 square foot shop sits with beautiful granite flooring. Half Caff is a small, 20 person spot where locals who have managed to make it to the top of the gigantic granite dome, can come to relax while drinking their favorite cup of joe. Half Caff first opened its doors in late 1994, shortly after the owner Mary Salter successfully hiked Half Dome on March 18th, 1994. While enjoying the beautiful view, her first thought was ‘I wish I had a cup of coffee with this view;’ months later, Half Caff was established. Although the owner Mary faced a number of challenges regarding permits and proper regulations for her shop, she fought through it and earned her spot at the top of the dome.

Like other traditional cafes, Half Caff serves coffee, tea, and pastries seven days a week, from 6:00AM-6:00PM. There is a patio just off the coffee shop where hikers and visitors can sit and enjoy what Yosemite has to offer. Food and coffee is delivered to the coffee shop by air and Mary’s pilot-flying brother drops down supplies as needed. For convenience, Mary sleeps in a small room just inside of the coffee shop. Her brother will occasionally pick her up in his helicopter when Yosemite National Park is closed, as she does not get any business during that time.
