Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station in London

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or Hogwarts, is believed to have been founded in the ninth or tenth century by Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin. The school's motto is Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus, Latin for "never tickle a sleeping dragon."

The location of Hogwarts is closely hidden from Muggles, or non-magical folk, but is rumored to be located in Scotland, near the border of Great Britain. The castle grounds are also home to a lake and border the Forbidden Forest.

According to J.K. Rowling, Hogwarts is a boarding school for witches and wizards ages 11 to 18. Classes such as Transfiguration, Arithmancy, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, and Herbology are reported as options for students at Hogwarts.

The Hogwarts Express, which leaves from platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross station in London, is the main method of transportation for students to and from school. Students at Hogwarts are said to be sorted into one of the four houses, named after the founders, upon arrival of their first day at Hogwarts.

Many believe that the world-class education received at Hogwarts will help set young witches and wizards on a career path in the magical world.
